Court House is a listed building dating back to the 17th century, providing affordable self-catering accommodation for groups of up to 23.
For over six decades, the house has served as a base for a wide range of visitors, including educational and youth groups as well as smaller parties and families.
Visitors to the house will find themselves a stone’s throw from the historic Cathedral and Bishop’s Palace as well as beaches, coastal paths and the city’s shops, restaurants, galleries and many attractions.
Court House is managed and maintained by the non-profit making charity, The Community of St David.
The House and its Facilities
Court House is simply but pleasantly furnished with gas central heating. Its eight bedrooms, with between one and six beds in each room, offer flexible sleeping arrangements for up to 23.
Visitors will find a well-equipped kitchen, a dining room and smaller breakfast room, a large, comfortable lounge with a traditional open fire, three shower/bathrooms, as well as laundry and drying facilities. Behind the House is a sun-trap courtyard and beyond, a spacious enclosed garden leading onto Curtis House. There is a ground floor single bedroom suitable for wheelchair users.
St Davids and Surrounding Area
This unique and rugged corner of Wales has its own very special qualities and beauty.
St. Davids, Britain’s smallest city, was once the medieval centre of Celtic Christianity. Its great Cathedral and the ruins of the Bishop’s Palace bear testimony to its importance in an age when two pilgrimages to St. Davids equalled one to Rome. Surrounded on three sides by water – and some of the country’s finest beaches and most exhilarating coastal walks and views – no visitor is ever short of things to do, see or delight in.
History and Ethos
Court House was the vision of Arthur Curtis, a professor of New Testament theology at Selly Oak Colleges, Birmingham. In the early 1960s, Arthur, alongside a group of sympathetic colleagues and students, sought out a property in need of renovation in the pilgrim city of St. Davids. Drawing inspiration from the Iona community in Scotland, he aimed to create a simple retreat centre to help rebuild and restore people from urban areas.
People were invited to live together in Court House for a week or more in the summer, physically helping to restore the house and engaging in conversations on educational, spiritual, and social themes in the evenings. Afternoons were always kept free to enjoy the surrounding area. When the house was sufficiently restored, it was hired out to other educational, youth, family, and community groups.
Court House continues in the spirit in which it was founded. Rooted in, but not bound by, Christian values, it offers visitors of all faiths and none the experience of simple, communal living in a place of outstanding beauty and spiritual significance – the city of St Davids.

Curtis House Community Space
Court House’s annex, Curtis House, provides space and facilities for local community groups and events. Curtis House has full wheelchair access, disabled toilet, as well as kitchenette and classroom facilities.
Curtis House is available for £14.00 per session (three ‘sessions’ are available every day – morning, afternoon and evening) or £26.00 for a whole day.
